decent but noisy - a mate had one of these and my old computer was on the brink so thought i d make use of 1 of the 2 internal drives I had in there by buying one of these.my initial thought was that the top of the icy box felt a little flimsy and thin, and that the colour around the edge was a little worn. however it was so simple to put together - most of the work is already done for you, all you have to do is connect your hd and plug the USB and power cable in. also it s a little annoying that it s got its own power supply as you have to manually switch it off when you turn off your comp if you re going to bed for example - otherwise it s just too noisy. the blue light s pretty cool but it does make quite a lot of noise thrashing. still for the money and the ease of use i ve given it 4 stars.
Better than I expected. - I bought 2 of these enclosures for a couple of IEE hard disks removed from an old PC that I m going to use for backups. They are very well constructed and it s easy to fit the hdd and connect to the computer. The enclosures come with all connecting leads, power supply and a drivers disk, although with Vista, there s no need for additional drivers - the device was recognised straight away. There s no cooling fan but this doesn t appear to be necessary as the hdd is screwed on to the aluminium side panel and it only gets warm after extended use - never hot. In use, the side panels glow with blue led light - a bit eerie, but not a problem. My only criticism is that the usb lead is a little on the short side, but this could easily be repaced or extended.
How to Recycle Your Hard Drive - My old pc was lying in a corner gathering dust, waiting for that trip to the skip. I finally decided to kill two birds with one stone - go green and recycle some computer bits and do what the experts always nag us about:start backing up important data on a regular basis. The icy box arrived in a substantial carton and I was immediately impressed by quality of the components- and for so little money.Installation of your old hard disk is relatively straightforward, if a rather tight fit inside the aluminium sides of icy box. The instructions are pretty basic and it does help if you have a little understanding of the hard drive e.g. jumper should be set to master - just look at the back of your hard drive for a little plastic peg that connects in 2 basic positions - there should be a diagram to help! The time from unpacking to connecting to my new pc was about 10 minutes.XP recognises the hard drive immediately and you are off and running - all for less than twenty quid - a bargain!p.s. find some decent backup software - Cobian is free but not for novice users perhaps?
